Help Others...Grow Through It

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Thistle Farms are two of many organizations that help people grow through some of life’s most difficult circumstances. Their work demonstrates that people can suffer adversity and change their lives favorably with the support of a caring community. Please consider helping them help others grow through it.

AFSP

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) mission is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. We fund research to improve interventions, train clinicians in suicide prevention, and advocate for policy that will save lives. We work to find better ways to reach those who suffer, and encourage schools, workplaces, and communities to make mental health a priority.

Since its founding in 1987, AFSP has:

  • Mobilized and connected tens of thousands of people who have lost a family member, loved one, or friend to suicide
  • Reached thousands of individuals who are at risk for suicide, as well as those who love and care for them
  • Attracted the participation of members of the scientific and clinical communities, who conduct groundbreaking research on suicide and its prevention with support from AFSP
  • Established local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and DC
  • Educated hundreds of local communities about suicide and how to prevent it
  • Created a public policy and lobbying arm by merging successfully with an existing national policy organization, thus enabling AFSP to press for legislation and policies at the federal, state and local levels that advance the goal of preventing suicide
  • Substantially increased our funding from individual donors, including the thousands of highly motivated individuals who participate in our Out of the Darkness Walks
  • Educated reporters and the media about how to best cover suicide
  • Communicated with hundreds of thousands of individuals through our website, social media, brochures, speakers and efforts to generate press coverage

Whether you've lost someone or are struggling with suicidal thinking, you are not alone. We bring people who have been affected by suicide out of the darkness, and give them opportunities to help others.

Thistle Farms

Thistle Farms is a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to helping women survivors recover and heal from prostitution, trafficking, and addiction. We do this by providing a safe place to live, a meaningful job, and a lifelong sisterhood of support.

Residential Program

We provide housing, case management, healthcare, counseling, education, and employment for two years — free of charge.

Our homes operate on a holistic model with no authority living in the house. Each one represents a community built on trust and love.

Love Heals. Five years after graduation, 75% of our graduates are living healthy, financially independent lives.

Social Enterprises

Meaningful employment leading to financial freedom is instrumental in the healing journey. Our 3 social enterprises —  Body & HomeThe Café, and Global Shared Trade — provide both gateway and permanent jobs for survivors, as well revenue for our mission.

Women survivors provide leadership roles in every department. Over the past year, these enterprises collectively reached more than 40,000 customers, providing over $2M in income for survivors. And we are just getting started.

National Network

A sisterhood of like-minded organizations that collaborate to provide housing, healing, and employment for women survivors across the country.

The survivor-led network houses over 500 women in healing sanctuaries across the country.

Our education team leads conferences to train and inspire, creating a catalyst for change.
